Consultation
First, consultation questions include: what do you want? Reference images? Color preferences or color names? Overall look and feel? What size? Sometimes a good consultation looks like a Pinterest board or a folder of screenshots because what you picture in your head isn’t so clear in words. Otherwise, creative freedom is mine. These are images I received for this design:
Quote
The execution of this design was on the easy side; no ladder or lift was involved, paint was provided, and it was local. Minimal prep was needed for this surface; the signage was painted on hardibacker, a very smooth surface. My mural quotes are calculated by square footage, difficulty, and supplies, so this project was on the low end of $1200.
Mockups
I combine a photo of the building with our consultation. Photoshop is the fastest way to work out color, layout, and make sure we’re on the same page. You are presented with a few options to help decide the direction of design. In this case, the main signage determined the overall look, so we focused on this design first. This was the first mockup board:
Feedback
After feedback, I made changes and tested ideas. Small sketches capture this best!
Some of the color was still undecided, like keeping the pink and adding wainscotting. I showed examples of these variations to make it easier to choose. In the end, this client decided to combine designs in a fun way.
Paperwork
Once we’ve established a design, size, and details, it’s time for paperwork. The invoice and service agreement. A 50% deposit is required before finalizing the design. After the project is painted, the remaining amount on the invoice is due. This was the concept vs the final design:
Painting begins
Painting days are scheduled. Small murals like these start in the dark with a projector and are drawn with chalk. I keep in touch with photo updates and capture videos to share. We do a final walk-through together and I follow up with any touch-ups.
