Consultation
First, consultation questions include: what do you want? Reference images? Color preferences or color names? Overall look and feel? What size? Sometimes a good consultation looks like a Pinterest board or a folder of screenshots because what you picture in your head isn’t so clear in words. Otherwise, creative freedom is mine. These are images I received for this design:
Quote
The execution of this design was relatively easy; no ladder or lift was required, paint was provided, and it was local. Minimal prep was needed for this surface; the signage was painted indoors on hardibacker, a very smooth surface. My mural quotes are calculated based on square footage, difficulty, and supplies.
Mockups
I combine a photo of the building with our consultation. Photoshop is the fastest way to work out color and layout, ensuring we’re on the same page. You are presented with several options to help determine the direction of design. In this case, the main signage determined the overall look, so we focused on this design first. The challenge was making sure the sign was easy to read against the Think Pink color base. This was the first mockup board:
Feedback
I made changes after feedback on the logo, then tested ideas for the side wall. Small sketches capture these quick ideas best. This system works out problems and builds on concepts. It also ensures we’ll see a clear silhouette from a distance.
Some of the color choices were still undecided, so I showed examples of color variations to make the choice easier. This client decided to combine designs in a fun way.
Final Design
Once we’ve established a design, size, and details, it’s time for paperwork. The invoice and service agreement are followed by a retainer to finalize the design. After the project is painted, the remaining amount on the invoice is due. This was the concept vs the final design:
Painting
Painting days are scheduled. Small murals like these begin with chalk and a projector. I keep in touch with photo updates and capture videos to share with you. We conduct a final walk-through together, and I follow up with any touch-ups.
